How Do You Clean a Coffee Machine?

By Sani Marc|2017-11-28

Most coffee makers get a lot of use. Which means they need to be regularly maintained to avoid premature wear and tear.

But the real reason to clean your coffee machine? Better tasting coffee. A dirty and clogged machine will take longer to heat the water and filter it through the grinds, which can ruin the taste and aroma of coffee.

Most people use tap water to fill the tank of their coffee maker. However, tap water contains calcium and other suspended particles. Once boiled, these particles can adhere to the inside of the machine. On top of ruining your morning cup of coffee, it can also clog your machine and prevent it from working properly.

Even worse? The water tank and other parts in a coffee machine can become mouldy and bacteria-laden over time. Although this usually doesn’t pose a serious health risk, regularly cleaning away mould and bacteria is obviously much more hygienic. How exactly should you keep your coffee machine clean so that you can continue to enjoy healthy, great-tasting coffee? The most important thing is to regularly descale and clean certain components.

Calcium usually takes a while to settle, so residue only forms after a month or two of use. To keep your coffee machine clean, descale it every month to dissolve this buildup. This can be easily done by using a cleaner like RAM , which dislodges mineral deposits, and by following the steps below.

How to descale a coffee maker

1. Fill the water tank with water and 2 oz. (60 ml) of RAM.

2. Turn on the machine.

3. Allow about one cup of water to run.

4. Turn off the coffee maker and let it stand for a few minutes.

5. Turn the machine back on and run all of the remaining liquid in the tank (repeat steps 1 to 5 if necessary).

6. Thoroughly rinse by machine by running another two full tanks with clear water.

7. Wipe all components of the machine with cleaning wipes.
